A local councilor assaulted the officer who came to disconnect the electricity at the house where the bill was not paid.

A United National Party (UNP) member of the Chilaw Pradeshiya Sabha has been arrested by the Madampe Police in connection with an incident where he assaulted an official of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) who had come to disconnect the electricity supply due to non-payment of the electricity bill for his residence. The CEB official, who was injured in this attack that occurred yesterday (23) afternoon, is currently admitted to the primary care unit of the Chilaw General Hospital and receiving treatment.

Police investigations have revealed that an official from the Chilaw Electricity Board had visited the member's house to disconnect the electricity supply because the relevant Pradeshiya Sabha member had failed to pay the electricity bill for his residence. When the official informed him that the electricity would be disconnected, a heated exchange of words occurred between the member and the official. Subsequently, the Pradeshiya Sabha member assaulted the official, and based on a complaint received regarding this, the police conducted investigations and arrested the suspect member.

The person thus arrested is a 28-year-old Pradeshiya Sabha member residing in the Old Town area of Madampe. Under the instructions of Madampe Police Station OIC Chief Police Inspector Saman Ekanayake, further investigations into the incident are underway, and the suspect member is scheduled to be produced before the Chilaw Magistrate's Court.
