15-year-old boy dies after being struck by lightning

During the heavy rainy weather that fell on the Agalawatta area, a 15-year-old boy who was sleeping on the floor of a room in his house unfortunately died yesterday due to a lightning strike. Agalawatta Police are conducting investigations into this unexpected accident.

The student who died prematurely in this manner is Hasitha Pradeep Kumara, a resident of Delpe, Agalawatta, who was studying in Grade 10 at Agalawatta Mihindu Central College. Although the student, who was in a serious condition after being struck by lightning, was immediately admitted to Agalawatta Pimbura Base Hospital, hospital sources confirm that he had already passed away by then.

Scientific observations state that when lightning strikes a nearby area, a high electrical voltage rapidly spreads across the ground surface. It has been pointed out that in such a situation, if a person is lying horizontally on the ground, the surface area of contact between the body and the soil is maximized. This increases the electric current flowing through major body parts, including the heart, making the resulting damage extremely severe.
