A police sergeant, who posed as a sorcerer and was accused of molesting a 16-year-old minor schoolgirl by claiming to remove a 'peretha doshaya' (evil spirit/curse) from her body, has been arrested by a team of officers from the Kotadeniyawa Police Children and Women's Bureau. The arrested sergeant is attached to the Yakkala Police Station in Gampaha.
While the schoolgirl was staying at the house of her mother's friend, the suspect, posing as a traditional healer who performs exorcisms, came to that house. There, he examined the girl and told her that she had a 'peretha doshaya' (evil spirit/curse), and claiming to remove it, he applied a type of oil all over her body and performed an oil treatment.
Subsequently, on the 9th of last month, the suspect police sergeant came to the girl's house, sent her mother out of the house, and made the girl drink some type of pills. Investigations have revealed that the girl, who lost consciousness after consuming the pills, regained her senses the following day.
Based on a complaint made by the molested girl regarding this incident, the Kotadeniyawa Police, conducting investigations and obtaining statements from her, uncovered that the crime was committed by a sergeant serving at the Yakkala Police. Accordingly, police officers acted and arrested the suspect sergeant, and steps have also been taken to hospitalize the girl for a medical examination.
Further investigations regarding the arrested suspect police sergeant are to be conducted, and he is to be produced before the court. Additionally, senior police officers have initiated a disciplinary inquiry against him concerning the incident.
