While the female student was studying at the municipal library, the employees closed the door and went home.

Urban Councillor Rasika Gunasinghe (SLPP) requested an investigation into an incident where an A/L student, studying in the public library located within the Maharagama Urban Council premises, was locked inside for about half an hour due to the negligence of the officials. She revealed this news at the monthly meeting of the Maharagama Urban Council held on the 7th.

Further commenting at this Urban Council meeting, chaired by Mr. Saman Samarakoon of the National People's Power (NPP), Ms. Rasika Gunasinghe stated that when the 17-year-old student came down from studying on the upper floor of the library, the officials had closed the doors and windows and gone home. Frightened by the absence of anyone, the student screamed and cried, and two children passing by on the road heard the sound and informed the Urban Council employees. Subsequently, two workers jumped into the library from the roof, further scaring the student. Later, someone else brought a key, opened the door, and let her out. The councillor stated in the council that a worker present at the time videoed her, causing the student severe mental distress, making her cover her face, and that the relevant officials had neglected their responsibilities.

Commenting on this incident, Urban Council Chairman Saman Samarakoon (NPP) stated that an investigation is underway, and statements have been obtained from the relevant officials and reports received. The Chairman also mentioned that if it is confirmed that the officials made a mistake, strict action would be taken against them. Meanwhile, Urban Councillor Kanthi Kodikara of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna emphasized that due to this incident, the Maharagama Urban Council library has become an unsafe place for children, and parents are reluctant to send their children there to study.
