An agitated situation suddenly arose among a group of inmates held in the 'E' ward of Colombo's Borella Magazine Prison today around 10:20 PM. Preliminary information reveals that this chaotic situation occurred due to a dispute over drugs escalating.
The incident began when a group of 40 inmates from that ward suddenly came out of the ward and behaved in a riotous manner. To prevent the situation from escalating further, police, the Police Riot Control Unit, and officers from the Police Special Task Force (STF) were immediately called to the prison premises, and security measures were tightened.
The Police Media Spokesperson stated that the existing unrest was brought under control after security forces, including Special Task Force officers, entered the prison premises and took action. Security has now been established within the premises, and a formal investigation into the incident has also been launched.
