Two school students who were electrocuted were rescued by Watawala Police.

Two schoolchildren who went to cut firewood from a tree in the Kuilwatte area, which falls under the Watawala Police Division, have been injured by an electric shock leaked from a high-voltage power line system. These two students, aged 12-13, studying in grades 7 and 8 at Watawala Kuilwatte Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, faced this unfortunate incident when they climbed a tree to cut dry firewood in a thicket located above their house.

The high-voltage power line system drawn above the tree had come into contact with the tree, causing electricity to leak along the tree, which led to this accident.

A group of estate workers who heard the students screaming after the electric shock immediately informed Police Constable Sanjeewa (84586) of the Watawala Police Traffic Division, who was on road duty nearby. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, the officer immediately informed the Watawala Police Station OIC, Chief Police Inspector Chandana Gamage. Accordingly, the OIC promptly contacted the Electrical Superintendent of the Nortonbridge Electricity Consumer Centre and arranged to disconnect the power to the high-voltage power line system.

After the power was disconnected, the two injured children were immediately rescued and admitted to the Watawala Divisional Hospital. The OIC stated that one student sustained burn injuries in several places on his body, while the other student was in a state of severe shock. Following the accident, Ceylon Electricity Board officials took steps to cut down the tree branches that were in contact with the power line system.
