Former Minister Ravi Karunanayake has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption after being questioned in connection with an ongoing investigation. He was arrested after a statement was recorded from him, following his arrival at the Bribery Commission around 8:15 AM, in response to a summons from investigators.
This investigation is being conducted into allegations that five individuals were recruited to the National Lotteries Board on a contract basis, outside the approved recruitment procedure, and subsequently assigned to the former minister's personal staff.
Investigators state that Mr. Ravi Karunanayake had previously been summoned on four occasions to appear before the Bribery Commission for this investigation, but he failed to attend. Furthermore, a team of officials had visited his residence on Rajamalwatta Road, Battaramulla, two days prior in connection with this inquiry, but the former minister was not at home at that time.
