Police fired at the car that abducted the girlfriend at BMICH

A news report emerged the day before yesterday about a young woman who was attending a graduation ceremony at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo being abducted by her boyfriend in a car. In this incident, which occurred last Saturday afternoon, the police acted swiftly, shooting the tires of the car and rescuing the young woman. The Cinnamon Gardens Police have launched investigations to apprehend the fleeing suspect boyfriend.

The suspect, after making a phone call and luring the young woman to his location, then forcibly put her into a car and fled. The young woman's father immediately informed the 119 Police Emergency Call Unit about this abduction. Accordingly, the Colombo District Special Operations Centre took steps to notify road barriers and police checkpoints across Colombo about the relevant car.

This car, which was driving along Nawala Road from Narahenpita, was identified by officers at a roadblock near the Police Hospital, who signaled it to stop. However, as the car continued to drive despite the command, a police constable there fired his service firearm at the car's tires. One shot hit the car's bumper, and another hit a nearby building. With the shooting, the terrified suspect jumped out of the moving car and fled.

The car, which continued forward without a driver, crashed into a nearby wall and stopped. No one was injured in the incident. During a subsequent search, a brand new machete was found inside the car, and the police suspect whether it was brought with the intention of harming the girlfriend.

Investigations revealed that the abducted young woman is a resident of Pelana, Weligama, and a graduate of the Sri Palee Campus of the University of Colombo. Among them, who had a long-term relationship, the suspect boyfriend, a resident of Midigama, is unemployed and addicted to drugs. Her father had advised her to end the relationship due to suspicions of his involvement in drug trafficking. Enraged by the young woman ending the relationship, accepting her father's advice, the suspect came to her house with a group of about ten people and behaved riotously.

Subsequently, there was no contact between the two, and it has been revealed that the suspect, upon learning about the young woman's graduation ceremony, came from Weligama and carried out this abduction. Further investigations into the incident are being conducted by a team including Senior Superintendent of Police Lucian Sooriyabandara, who is in charge of the Colombo South Division, under the supervision of Deputy Inspector General of Police Nishantha Soysa, who is in charge of the Colombo Division.
