Namal questioned regarding the purchase of Tangalle Bay Hotel

Mr. Namal Rajapaksa, National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and Member of Parliament, appeared before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) and gave a statement for nearly six hours. He appeared in response to a summons related to a lengthy investigation into the purchase of the Tangalle Bay Hotel located on the beachfront.

These interrogations were based on allegations that the hotel transaction was carried out using funds obtained through the Carlton Sports Network (CSN) television channel, which is connected to the Rajapaksa family.

After recording the statement, the MP left, and no new charges have been filed against him following this appearance. 

Mr. Namal Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has previously been investigated for several financial irregularities. In January 2025, the Attorney General filed indictments against him on charges of misappropriating 70 million rupees provided by the Indian company Krrish Lanka for rugby development. Additionally, investigations were conducted into a 15 million rupee money laundering transaction involving NR Consultancy.

However, in November 2023, the Colombo High Court acquitted Namal Rajapaksa in another money laundering case related to Gowers Corporation. According to The Island newspaper, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) recently initiated an inquiry into his legal qualifications and admission to the Sri Lanka Law College, charges which he vehemently denies. News reports further state that this latest summons is solely related to the ongoing investigation into the Tangalle Bay Hotel transaction.
