Amidst a heated debate surrounding the disappearance of USD 2.5 million from the Treasury, the Australian government has refused to release information regarding the citizenship of Mr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance. According to 'The Island' newspaper, prominent lawyer and civil activist Mr. Nagananda Kodituwakku requested this information from Australia's Department of Home Affairs under Section 15 of Australia's Freedom of Information Act No. 3 of 1982.

Mr. Kodituwakku stated that although Australian authorities initially agreed to provide the relevant information, they later rejected the request. He points out that if Mr. Suriyapperuma were not an Australian citizen, the department could have directly clarified that, and the concealment of information in this manner creates serious suspicion. He further added that he expects to take legal action in the future regarding Mr. Suriyapperuma's entry into Parliament via the National List of the National People's Power (NPP), in violation of the Constitution.

Mr. Suriyapperuma, who served as the former Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning from November 2024 to June 2025, is also embroiled in allegations concerning the alleged disappearance of USD 2.5 million from the Treasury. Mr. Nagananda Kodituwakku emphasizes that there is a serious transparency issue regarding this amount, which was paid to a third party as an installment of a loan obtained from Australia. Meanwhile, 'The Island' newspaper report also recalls how Ms. Geetha Kumarasinghe and Ms. Diana Gamage previously lost their parliamentary seats due to legal issues related to dual citizenship.
