King Charles III and Prince William are facing a massive £10 million bill to improve energy efficiency across their royal estates. Although they consistently advocate for environmental protection, there is a possibility that they will face severe criticism in the future if they fail to update their properties in accordance with the government's new energy standards.
It has been estimated that updating one house on these estates to meet the new standards will cost approximately £10,000. If they continue to rent out these houses without carrying out the necessary energy upgrades, they will have to pay a fine of £30,000 for each such house. According to new government regulations, rented homes must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of at least 'C' by the year 2030.
This new legal situation primarily affects the royal properties of Sandringham Estate, the Duchy of Lancaster, and the Duchy of Cornwall. According to an investigation by 'The Guardian' newspaper, energy certificates for over 700 houses across these three estates were examined, and 630 of them failed to meet the government's new proposed standards. 99 percent of the rented houses on the Sandringham Estate have an energy rating of 'D' or lower. In Lancaster, this figure is over 90 percent, and in Cornwall, it is approximately 80 percent.
The total number of rented houses across these three royal estates is estimated to be over 1,200, and the total cost of renovations is expected to exceed £10 million. However, King Charles and Prince William receive an annual income of approximately £50 million through these Duchies, and they are also exempt from many business taxes.
Responding to this, royal spokespersons state that they are committed to promptly addressing their tenants' issues and improving the energy efficiency of the houses. The Duchy of Cornwall has spent £11 million on housing improvements since 2022, and the Duchy of Lancaster invested over £3 million for the same purpose last year. They further pointed out that while improving energy efficiency in old historic buildings is a challenging task, they are continuously working to meet the new standards.
