4 underworld figures caught based on phone information

Four members of an organized crime gang involved in the grenade attack on a two-story house located on Gnaneendra Road, Ratmalana, belonging to a relative of Russell Smith, a prominent drug trafficker residing abroad, were arrested by the Mount Lavinia Headquarters Police the day before yesterday (8). Those arrested are close associates of the organized criminal known as "Kudu Anju," who operates in the Ratmalana area.

Grenades were thrown at the said house on two occasions between 3:30 AM and 5:30 AM on the 5th of last month. Police interrogations revealed that the suspects launched a second grenade attack because the first grenade thrown did not explode. Several glass windows of the house were damaged in the attack, but no one was injured in the incident.

A mobile phone was taken into police custody from the main suspect arrested, and it contained photographs taken at the location before and after the attack. The main suspect further revealed that these photographs were sent via WhatsApp to "Dumudu," a close associate of Kudu Anju, who is hiding in Dubai, to confirm the successful execution of the attack. Furthermore, the safety pin of the grenade thrown at the house was also found in the suspect's possession by the police, and it is said that he received three hundred thousand rupees for carrying out this grenade attack.

Among those arrested in connection with this incident, in addition to the two main suspects who directly carried out the grenade attack, are the person who pointed out the house and the person who provided lodging facilities to the suspects after the attack. After the grenade attack, the suspects fled along the railway line and hid in a nearby house, and the person residing in that house was also arrested on charges of aiding and abetting them to hide. The two main suspects were arrested from a house in the Egoda Uyana police division, and the other suspect was arrested from a house located near the Ratmalana Economic Centre.

Police state that this attack was carried out as a result of the intense gang rivalry between "Kudu Anju" and "Kos Malli" factions in the Ratmalana area recently. These four suspects, residents of Ratmalana and Moratuwa areas, are scheduled to be produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court.
