WhatsApp introduces Usernames for enhanced security

WhatsApp messaging service, owned by Meta, has taken steps to introduce a new 'Usernames' feature that allows users to connect with each other without exchanging phone numbers, thereby further protecting their privacy. This will bring WhatsApp to a similar level as other leading messaging platforms like Telegram, Signal, and Discord. Users now have the opportunity to reserve their preferred usernames even before its official global launch.

This new method will be an ideal solution for situations where users are reluctant or uncomfortable sharing their private phone numbers, such as when connecting with neighborhood groups, parents of children's sports teams, or people met at various events. Since no public directory or search database will operate under this service, one must know the exact username to send a message to someone. Additionally, a 'Username Key' will be introduced as an extra security measure, which will prevent anyone from connecting via a username without the relevant secret key.

This feature allows various businesses, creators, and organizations to reserve the same usernames for WhatsApp that they currently use on social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram, thereby maintaining a consistent identity. The process of reserving a username takes less than a minute. To do this, update the WhatsApp application to the latest version, go to 'Settings', select 'Account', tap 'Username', and enter your desired name. If your preferred name is already taken by someone else, you can use WhatsApp's automatic suggestion system (Username Generator) to choose another name and confirm it.

Since this username reservation feature is currently being rolled out server-side in phases to several countries worldwide, including Sri Lanka, it may not be visible to all users simultaneously. If your account has not yet received this feature, there is no need to worry unnecessarily; an in-app notification will inform the user as soon as the service becomes available in their country.
