A resident of the Bingiriya area passed away while receiving treatment at the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital, following an incident where he was bitten by a two-week-old puppy that had been brought home from an estate in the Chilaw area to be raised as a pet. Following this death, Mr. Hettigamage Nandana Priya, the Emergency Coroner of Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital, has instructed all members of the deceased's household to immediately take steps to receive the anti-rabies vaccine.
According to investigations conducted by Bingiriya Police, this person had brought the puppy home about a month ago. One day, he accidentally stepped on the puppy's foot. The startled animal then bit him, and subsequently, due to a kick delivered by this person, the puppy died on the spot. Afterwards, he proceeded to bury the deceased animal's body.
These details were revealed through testimonies given by the deceased's wife and son before the Emergency Coroner. This person, who suddenly fell ill after the bite, was admitted to the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital. He passed away while receiving treatment in a specially isolated room there, and the post-mortem examination of the body was conducted by Judicial Medical Officer K. T. Gavindra of the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital.
To ascertain the exact cause of death, parts of the deceased's brain have been sent to experts at the Government Analyst's Department for further scientific examination. The Emergency Coroner stated that the official cause of death would be announced after receiving the relevant analyst reports, and Police Sergeant Abeyruwan (35918) of Bingiriya Police led the evidence in this inquest.
Following special health safety protocols applicable to a person who died from rabies, authorities had taken steps to seal the coffin containing the deceased's body. Accordingly, the final rites were completed amidst strict health safety measures at the Kuliyapitiya Kanadulla Public Cemetery.
