Lucy, a police sniffer dog brought to Sri Lanka from the Netherlands, who has received special training in identifying criminals, has given birth to eight puppies at the Asgiriya Police Canine Division in Kandy. This marks the first instance in recent history where a female dog at the Asgiriya Police Canine Division has given birth to eight puppies at once, and it is also Lucy's first delivery.

During this delivery, she gave birth to five female puppies and three male puppies, and an officer from the Police Canine Division confirmed that all the puppies are in very good health. Officers have already made arrangements to provide formal training for these new puppies in specialized duties such as apprehending criminals, raiding drug trafficking operations, and searching for explosives, once they complete six months of age.

Lucy, who is currently caring for her puppies with great affection, has been allocated the next two months to spend time with them. Accordingly, during this period, she will not be used for criminal investigation operations, and after the two months are over, she is scheduled to receive special training again and be assigned to her usual duties.

Lucy was part of the group of 35 dogs brought to Sri Lanka from the Netherlands in 2024. She currently maintains a strict protective policy towards her puppies, and it is noteworthy that she does not allow any other police officer to approach the puppies' location, except for Assistant Superintendent of Police (Veterinary) Amal Dassanayake, Sub-Inspector Thilakarathne, the OIC of the Veterinary Unit, and Police Constable Dinindu Kumara (104983), who handles her.
