Grandmother and 12-year-old grandson killed in Payagala bus-three-wheeler accident

A severe road accident occurred around 12 midnight yesterday (01) on the Galle - Colombo main road, in the Payagala, Katukurunda area, due to a head-on collision between a private bus and a three-wheeler. As a result of this accident, which is being investigated by the Payagala Police, a grandmother and her grandson from the same family, who were traveling in the three-wheeler, have died, and two others have been injured.

Those who died in this tragic incident are a 62-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy residing in the Kalutara, Duwe Pansala Road area. They had gone to witness the Poson festivities in the Beruwala area and were returning home when they encountered this unexpected accident. It is reported that the grandmother and grandson, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, passed away after being admitted to the Kalutara Teaching Hospital.

The private bus, which was traveling from Colombo to Matara, had stopped at the Kalutara Katukurunda main bus stop and was just starting to move forward when the three-wheeler coming from the opposite direction overturned and collided with the front of the bus. At the time of the accident, the three-wheeler was being driven by the grandfather of the deceased child, who also sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Kalutara Hospital. The other woman traveling in the three-wheeler sustained only minor injuries.

The manner in which this horrific accident occurred was clearly recorded by a camera installed at the front of the bus. Meanwhile, it has also been revealed that, taking advantage of the chaotic situation that arose after the accident, a passenger on the bus stole the driver's bag containing documents, including his vehicle license. The incident of this theft was also recorded by the security CCTV cameras installed inside the bus.
