
Three individuals who impersonated tourist police officers, detained a Brazilian national, and demanded a ransom of three million rupees have been arrested by the Unawatuna Tourist Police. The Brazilian tourist was staying at a lodge in Talpe, Galle, when two suspects arrived at the location and searched his room, claiming to be from the tourist police.The police stated that they took possession of the victim's Brazilian passport, American documents, mobile phones, and several other personal belongings.
Later, another suspect joined them, and subsequently, the group handcuffed and threatened the foreigner. The suspects demanded 3 million rupees, claiming that the money was needed to bribe a senior police officer in Colombo to prevent his arrest. The suspects stated that they had already raised two hundred thousand rupees by pawning a motorcycle and pressured the victim to immediately pay the remaining 2.8 million rupees.
Acting on a complaint regarding the incident, Unawatuna Tourist Police officers launched a special operation and arrested the three suspects, aged 25 and 26. The police also seized an Alto type car used by the suspects for the crime. The arrested suspects are to be produced before the Galle Magistrate's Court, and further investigations into the incident are underway.
