
Several members of groups who came to perform Kavadi dance at the annual Perahera festival of the Devinuwara Upulvan Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya have been arrested by the police with drugs.
These suspects were arrested this morning (28) during a special search operation carried out under the instructions of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Kithsiri Jayalath, who is in charge of the Southern Province, and 'Ice' drug and cannabis were taken into police custody from their possession.
Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Kithsiri Jayalath stated to 'Dasatha News' that steps will be taken to subject all members of the Kavadi groups scheduled to perform in tonight's Perahera to a special inspection before they join the procession.
Furthermore, it is reported that nearly 1,500 security personnel have been deployed to ensure overall security and maintain law and order during tonight's Perahera.
