China and the Philippines clash over the South China Sea dispute

The Philippines accuses the Chinese Coast Guard of severely obstructing and firing water cannons at vessels carrying aid to its fishermen in the disputed waters of the South China Sea. This incident was reported last Thursday near Scarborough Shoal, notably occurring just hours before a regional security summit was scheduled to take place in Manila with the participation of Chinese and US diplomats.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard, a Chinese vessel approached their 'BRP Datu Dumangsil' vessel to within about 50 meters and fired water cannons for approximately two minutes. About half an hour later, another Chinese vessel dangerously maneuvered within about 500 meters of the Philippine vessel 'Datu Paiburong', obstructing it. However, Philippine authorities confirmed that none of their vessels sustained damage from these attacks, and the operation to supply fuel to the fishermen continued uninterrupted.

Commenting on the incident, Chinese Coast Guard spokesperson Jiang Lue stated that Philippine vessels ignored their warnings and illegally entered the area of China's Huangyan Island. He further stated that they took necessary measures to legally monitor, obstruct, and expel them from the area. Although lacking international legal basis, China claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, and the Scarborough Shoal area is a rich fishing ground located 240 kilometers from the Philippine island of Luzon and hundreds of kilometers from mainland China.

This is the second confrontation reported between the two states within the past four days. Previously, on Monday, a clash occurred between naval personnel of both countries near the Second Thomas Shoal area, where Chinese officials reportedly struck a Philippine sailor with a club. In light of this situation, ambassadors from both countries were summoned on Tuesday to inquire about the matter. The issue of maritime security has been given prominence in the ongoing summits attended by several countries, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
