Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) from Thambowa and Kalaoya have taken legal action against an individual who was operating a betel quid (bulathwita) dansala containing tobacco in the Saliyawewa area. The Public Health Inspectors received information about this dansala, which was organized to be effective within the Karuwalagaswewa Medical Officer of Health (MOH) division, and a team of officers immediately acted upon it to conduct this raid.
It is reported that even when the Public Health Inspectors were inspecting the location, betel quids containing tobacco were being distributed to the people who had gathered there. The officers then explained to the person in charge of the location the illegality of operating such a dansala without proper authorization. However, the individual in question refused to accept the advice and behaved in an agitated manner, obstructing the official duties of the health officers.
Due to the heated situation that arose, the Public Health Inspectors immediately informed the Saliyawewa Police Station by phone, and a group of police officers was called to the scene. Accordingly, the police officers recorded statements from the individual involved in the incident and the officers, and steps have been taken to file a lawsuit against the person who illegally operated a dansala while obstructing the duties of government officials, instructing them to appear before the Puttalam court on the upcoming July 9th.
