Eleven people have been hospitalized with injuries following a severe accident where a van traveling from the Batticaloa area towards Manampitiya veered off the road and collided with a tree. Police state that the accident occurred on the 13th of last month, around 5:00 PM, in the Mahawewa Gavanguwa area of Manampitiya.
Immediate action was taken by residents and the police to admit the injured to Polonnaruwa and Manampitiya hospitals.This group was returning home after attending a wedding ceremony in the Batticaloa area when they faced this unfortunate fate. All those injured in the accident have been identified as residents of the Manampitiya Tamil village. The vehicle, while in motion, suddenly lost control, veered off the road, and collided with a nearby 'Kohn' tree. Preliminary investigations conducted by Manampitiya Police have revealed that excessive speed, reckless driving, and the driver falling asleep were direct causes of this accident.
Among the injured is an eight-year-old girl, and hospital sources state that the condition of three individuals, including the van driver, is extremely serious. Currently, nine people injured in the accident are receiving inpatient treatment at Polonnaruwa General Hospital, while the other two are receiving treatment at Manampitiya Divisional Hospital. Manampitiya Police Station OIC, Chief Police Inspector P.G.A.C. Ariyaratne, along with a team of police officers, are conducting further investigations into the incident.
