During a recent Italian National Day celebration, a heated exchange of words took place between former Minister Professor G.L. Peiris and prominent businessman Dudley Sirisena.
Both parties were present at the event organized by the Italian Embassy on the 2nd of last month, where a discussion escalated, leading to this situation. According to reports, other guests present had to intervene to prevent the conflict from escalating into a physical altercation. The primary reason for this heated situation was a recent statement made by Professor G.L. Peiris regarding Sri Lanka's economic crisis. The professor had accused that the Rolls-Royce car imported into the country by Mr. Dudley Sirisena was one of the reasons for the increasing tax burden and the rising dollar price in the country. Deeply angered by this statement, businessman Dudley Sirisena questioned the professor about it at the event itself, which initiated this verbal attack.
Mr. Dudley Sirisena, speaking with great emotion, emphasized that his car was not imported through any illicit transactions, commissions, or under duty concession permits. He stated that he imported the vehicle legitimately, paying all due taxes to the government, with money earned through his hard work in business, day and night.
Furthermore, he questioned whether only those like the professor, who went to school in Rolls-Royce cars and even used them to bring food from a young age, have the right to use such vehicles. Mr. Sirisena further stated loudly that some people feel so much envy and discomfort when someone like him, from a poor family, achieves success through hard work and buys such a vehicle.
