A valuable human life can be lost forever in an instant due to a momentary hurt feeling or a slight oversight.

A deeply tragic story is reported from Meewanapalana, Horana, where a young woman took her own life due to severe distress caused by her boyfriend going to a 'dansala' (a place offering free food/drinks during festivals) alone without her. The unfortunate victim is a twenty-five-year-old woman named Shanika Sewwandi, who resided in the Meewanapalana area.

This couple had been in a relationship for some time and were dreaming of entering married life soon with the blessings of their elders. On the first of last month, Shanika went to her boyfriend's house in Ranala Navagamuwa. Although she invited her boyfriend to go to a 'dansala' held in the area, he bypassed her and went there alone. The intense disappointment and anger born from the feeling that the 'dansala' was more important to him than she was pushed her towards this dark decision.

This incident is not merely a minor disagreement in a romantic relationship; it highlights a profound social tragedy concerning the current generation's inability to control their emotions. Her last few words confirm that she did not truly wish to end her life. After being admitted to Navagamuwa Hospital in critical condition around 7:00 PM that night, she told her mother a heartbreaking story before she passed away.

"Mother... I did this to scare him, not because I wanted to die..." she said, weeping from her hospital bed.

Even though she spoke well with her family as death loomed, she only had the fortune to live with them for about another hour; reiterating to the entire society that death is not a game one can choose to scare others.
