The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the 'Bahujana Balaya' political organizations have both taken steps to immediately remove Mr. Charith Abeysinghe, who is currently in remand custody on charges of accepting bribes, from his party membership and all positions he represented. It is reported that these swift decisions were made by the political parties following his remand on the 25th of last month in connection with an alleged bribery incident that occurred in 2023.

A special media statement issued under the signature of Mr. Ranjith Madduma Bandara, General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, states that Mr. Charith Abeysinghe served as the Horana electorate organizer for the party, and in light of the current situation, the party decided to immediately suspend his party membership as well as all positions he held. However, the statement emphasizes that Mr. Charith Abeysinghe was not acting as a member or organizer of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya at the time of the alleged bribery incident in 2023,

and that he did not hold any position in the party during that period. The statement further asserts that the party will never stand for individuals involved in corruption or illegal activities,

and that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya will provide maximum support for the enforcement of the law.

Meanwhile, the Executive Board of the 'Bahujana Balaya' organization has also unanimously decided to immediately remove Mr. Charith Abeysinghe from its membership and from his position as National Organizer, taking into account the serious allegations of bribery and corruption against him, the ongoing official investigations, and his arrest. A statement issued under the signature of Mr. Iranga Mendis, General Secretary of Bahujana Balaya, indicates that this administrative decision was made to protect the party's reputation, credibility, and public trust. The organization also points out that this is not a prejudgment made before a court conviction, and the Executive Board will take further steps considering future legal developments and the court's decision.
