A driver of the Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabha, who provided shelter and assistance to the main suspect in the incident where a woman's body was found abandoned in a car in the Theldeniya area, was arrested by the police today (24). Assistant Superintendent of Police 01 Chandana Basnayake, in charge of the Nuwara Eliya Division, confirmed that a special team of Nuwara Eliya Police officers arrested this suspect in the Kundasale area.
Investigations have revealed that this driver, who was arrested after analyzing phone data, is a close friend of the main suspect involved in the murder.Meanwhile, the main suspect in the murder incident and his wife were also arrested this morning in the Jaffna area during a special operation launched by the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Striking Unit. On the 17th, Theldeniya Police found the body of a 34-year-old woman named Shamya Darshani, who worked as a physiotherapist at Ampara Hospital, inside a car. Her boyfriend had committed the murder, left the body in the vehicle, and fled, and the police had conducted an extensive seven-day investigation to find the suspect.
Following the instructions of Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya, a special investigation into this crime was launched under the direct supervision of Assistant Superintendent of Police Rohan Olugala, Director of the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Striking Unit. Accordingly, under the guidance of Chief Police Inspector Indika Weerasinghe, the OIC of that unit, a team of officers including Police Inspector R.M.R. Chathuranga, began search operations in areas frequented by the suspect since yesterday. During this operation, conducted with the technical assistance of the Criminal Investigation Department, the police managed to uncover information that the suspect was traveling from the Wellawatte area towards Jaffna.
Based on the information received, after informing officers of the Jaffna Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau, the police took steps to intercept and stop the bus in which the suspect was traveling in the Chavakachcheri Kaithady area. At that time, the suspect was with his wife and one child, and the police state that the suspect was wearing a face mask and his wife was disguised as a Muslim woman. Although the suspect claimed he planned to go from Jaffna via Vavuniya and Kurunegala to see his other two children there and then surrender to the police, the police suspect he was preparing to flee to India with his family via Jaffna. Officers from the Walana Anti-Corruption Striking Unit are currently bringing the suspect from Jaffna to the Nuwara Eliya Police.
