Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay (popular actor Vijay or Thalapathy Vijay) has announced a new welfare program called the 'Thai Maaman Gold Ring Scheme'.

Under this unique program, every baby born in government hospitals across Tamil Nadu will be gifted a one-gram gold ring. A special feature of this relief is that it will be provided retroactively, as all children born in government hospitals from June 22, 2026, which was Chief Minister Vijay's birthday, will be eligible for this benefit.

The Tamil Nadu government has allocated an annual budget of Indian Rupees 755.83 crores for this massive welfare project. Officials have been instructed to immediately commence the tender process for the procurement of gold rings, and the official launch is planned for September 15, 2026, which marks the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai. Additionally, according to initial proposals, a special welcome kit for newborns may also be provided along with the gold ring.

The cultural background behind this program is also very interesting. According to Tamil tradition, there is a ritual called 'Thai Maaman Seer' where the mother's brother, or uncle (Thai Maaman), presents gold or other gifts to welcome and bless a newborn. Through this program, the state government symbolically portrays the role of this uncle, attempting to connect with the people. The primary objectives are to encourage births in government hospitals, thereby enhancing the health security of mothers and children, and to provide symbolic relief to economically unstable families. Furthermore, this fulfills a major election promise included in the 'Vettri Tamilagam Vision Document' of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party.

This program, one of the early welfare initiatives introduced by the new government led by Vijay, has garnered significant public attention and political discussion. Supporters claim it is a creative step that perfectly aligns cultural traditions with welfare needs. However, critics like VCK party leader Thirumavalavan argue that these funds should not be spent on gold rings but rather be reallocated to improve infrastructure in government maternity wards and hospitals. Furthermore, various discussions have arisen regarding the timing of this decision and potential connections with stakeholders in the jewelry industry. Nevertheless, through this initiative, the new government continues Tamil Nadu's traditional welfare political pattern while successfully portraying the Chief Minister as 'the people's uncle,' thereby building close communication with the sentiments of Tamil families.
