Two first-year students of the Faculty of Science at the University of Peradeniya have been arrested by a team of university disciplinary officers along with a stock of illegal drugs and foreign cigarettes. The two suspect students, taken into custody by the security division, have been handed over to the Peradeniya Police Station for further investigations.

The disciplinary division had received information that these students were involved in a drug trafficking operation, using and selling drugs within the university premises. Acting on this information, a team of officers conducted a sudden inspection of their room at the Marcus Fernando Hostel yesterday (24) around 12:30 AM, successfully carrying out the raid.

At the time of their arrest, disciplinary officers were able to find 7530 milligrams of hashish and 40 foreign cigarettes brought into the country from abroad in the possession of these students. According to police reports, these two students, aged 23, are residents of Kotte and Mirigama areas.

During the room inspection, officers found 3410 milligrams of hashish and 20 foreign cigarettes in the possession of one student, and 4120 milligrams of hashish and another 20 foreign cigarettes in the possession of the other student.

On a previous occasion, a student was arrested for possessing drugs in a hostel at the University of Peradeniya. Taking into account intelligence reports indicating a rapid increase in drug use among the university student community, the university's disciplinary division emphasizes that such sudden raids will continue to be carried out to suppress these illegal activities.
