Official approval has been granted by the Constitutional Council for the appointment of Supreme Court Justice Yasantha Kodagoda as a new member of the Judicial Service Commission. This decision was made after considering a special recommendation submitted to the Constitutional Council by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The Constitutional Council, which convened on the 22nd, extensively examined the President's proposal and proceeded to grant this approval. According to the provisions of the Sri Lankan Constitution, the most senior judge after the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is qualified for membership in the Judicial Service Commission. In accordance with this statutory requirement, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had thus submitted the name of Justice Yasantha Kodagoda to the Constitutional Council.
This new appointment has been made to fill the vacancy in the Judicial Service Commission caused by the retirement of former Supreme Court Justice S. Thureirajah. Accordingly, Yasantha Kodagoda will officially serve as a member of the said Commission in the future.
