A special police investigation has been launched to arrest a lawyer and a prison jailer who are alleged to have aided and abetted the presentation of fake sureties to secure bail for Mr. Kapila Chandrasena, the former CEO of SriLankan Airlines, while he was in remand prison. Information has been revealed that these two individuals were directly involved in the process of presenting two unknown persons to fulfill the bail conditions when bail was granted to the suspect by the Colombo Magistrate's Court.
According to the investigations conducted so far, police teams have already extensively questioned the lawyer and the jailer and recorded their statements. It has been revealed that Mr. Kapila Chandrasena maintained a close relationship with this jailer during his time in prison. Police sources further state that following a request by Mr. Chandrasena to find two suitable sureties for his bail, the jailer and the lawyer together found two individuals from the Keselwatta area for a fee and presented them to the court.
A sum of Rs. 75,000 was promised for this service of finding sureties, and it is said that a person who had previously worked as Mr. Chandrasena's manager was ready to pay this amount. The said manager has already been taken into police custody, and further investigations are being conducted by the Colombo Central Division Criminal Investigation Unit under the instructions of senior police officers including Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Western Province, Mr. Sajeeva Medawatta, and Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Colombo District, Mr. Nishantha Zoysa.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanka S. Bodaragama had ordered on the 7th that Mr. Kapila Chandrasena be re-arrested and produced before the court for misleading the court by presenting unknown individuals as sureties and breaching trust. While the relevant commission was preparing to arrest him, Mr. Kapila Chandrasena's body was found by the police, suspiciously deceased, in a house located in the Kollupitiya area.
