A report released by a leading cancer research charity has revealed that the number of people diagnosed with melanoma, the most severe type of skin cancer, has reached a record high in the United Kingdom. Accordingly, 20,980 melanoma patients were reported in 2022 alone, marking the first time such a high number of patients has been recorded in the country's history.
Forecasting the future, the organization indicates that the number of new patients diagnosed annually could rise to 26,500 by 2040. This represents an increase of 23% among men and 26% among women compared to current figures. The organization further states that the growing and aging population in the UK are the main reasons for this increase in cancer patients.Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of the Cancer Research UK, points out that this record increase in patients is a matter of great concern and emphasizes that excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays is a major factor contributing to melanoma. It has been found that nine out of ten cancer patients reported in the UK are affected by excessive exposure to sunlight and sunbeds. Experts advise that to protect against cancer, it is essential to stay in the shade when the sun is strong, wear clothing that adequately covers the body, and apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
Among men, cancer is most commonly found in the torso area, including the chest, back, and abdomen, while among women, it is more frequently observed in the lower parts from the hips to the feet. Health authorities constantly remind that even on cloudy days, not just on intensely sunny days, strong sunlight can damage the skin, and it is crucial to adopt sun protection strategies in daily life to prevent cancer. If there is any unusual blemish, a changing mole, or a wound that does not heal on the skin, seeking immediate medical attention without neglecting it can lead to early detection of cancer and save lives.
