
Three individuals, including a woman, who were secretly engaged in treasure hunting behind a house in the Halamba area of Agalawatta, have been arrested by the Mathugama Headquarters Police. During this arrest, made on the 4th of last month, several tools used by the suspects for treasure hunting were also taken into police custody.
This group was apprehended during a sudden raid conducted based on information received by Mr. Udayanga, the OIC of the Crime Division of Mathugama Police. According to the police, among those arrested are a woman residing in the Halamba area of Agalawatta, a resident of Bowala area in Walasmulla, and an individual residing in Mahagama area of Bulathsinhala.
The suspects were arrested while they were actively engaged in excavation work at the site. Among the items seized from them were a water pump, five electric detonators used for blasting rocks, gunpowder, and a stock of wires of various sizes. Additionally, the police also found a stock of tools including rock drilling bits, crowbars, hoes, and plastic tarpaulins.
Further investigations into this incident are being conducted by a team of officers, including Mr. Udayanga, the OIC of the Crime Division, under the instructions of Mr. Saman Rohana, the OIC of Mathugama Headquarters Police. The police further report that the arrested suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Mathugama Magistrate's Court.
