Police have arrested a main suspect in connection with the theft of gold jewelry belonging to three women who were traveling on a passenger bus from Anuradhapura to Colombo.
Police investigations have revealed that this theft occurred on the night of April 02, 2026. As a result of an operation conducted by a team of officers attached to the Anuradhapura Police Station, the arrest was made on April 17 in the Pandulagama area.
According to the police, the suspect befriended the three women at the Anuradhapura bus stand and boarded the same bus they were traveling on. During the journey, he gave the women some food and drink, after which they became very drowsy, preliminary investigations have revealed.
Police further state that the suspect cleverly committed the theft by taking advantage of the women's semi-conscious state.
Investigating officers have already managed to recover stolen gold jewelry worth approximately 1.7 million rupees (Rs. 1.7 million).
The person arrested is a 54-year-old resident of the Saliyawewa area, and the Anuradhapura Police are currently questioning him further in connection with the incident.
