A mother and her teenage daughter have died in an incident where an unknown group allegedly deliberately set fire to the upper floor of a two-story house located in the Pamunuwa area of Maharagama. Police confirm that two other men sustained serious burn injuries in this crime.
The unfortunate victims who died were a 55-year-old woman and her 16-year-old daughter, who lived in a rented house in the area.
The girl's father and the 76-year-old owner of the house were severely burned in the fire and are currently hospitalized receiving treatment.
This tragic incident was reported last Friday (18). When the house caught fire, residents immediately acted together to extinguish the flames and also took steps to transport the injured to the hospital. The bodies of the deceased mother and daughter were later found inside a room in the house.
Police state that there was a smell of petrol at the crime scene, and preliminary investigations suggest that this was not merely a fire but a planned arson with the intention of committing a double murder.
The exact reason or motive for this cruel crime has not yet been identified, and Maharagama Police have launched extensive investigations to apprehend the suspects.
