A senior military officer has expressed strong displeasure regarding the statement made by Additional Solicitor General Dilipa Peiris in open court, alleging that certain army officers are obstructing the investigations into the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.
It is reported that prior to this incident, an officer from the Army Legal Division met the Additional Solicitor General and informed him that the relevant senior officer wished to speak with him over the phone.
Accordingly, the phone conversation between the two began very cordially but later became heated. The senior officer accused the Additional Solicitor General of causing great inconvenience to the army through his statements in court, alleging that the army was not cooperating with the investigations into the Easter attacks. Although the military officer argued that the army provides maximum support for these investigations, Mr. Dilipa Peiris rejected that idea, emphasizing that the actual situation was not so.
It is also mentioned that at one point, the relevant officer warned that if the Additional Solicitor General continues to make such statements in court, the army would have to complain to the President about his conduct.
There, the Additional Solicitor General pointed out that information has been revealed that military intelligence has provided funds for suspects arrested in connection with the Easter attacks to obtain legal assistance, and that this is by no means a correct action. He also informed the officer that the Attorney General's Department intends to inform the court about individuals who refuse to assist in the investigations into these terrorist attacks and to summon them before the court.
It is further learned that Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe has also been informed about this phone conversation between the relevant senior military officer and Additional Solicitor General Dilipa Peiris.
