A recent unfortunate incident turned the laughter of a family, united in New Year's joy, into a great wail in an instant, bathing the entire country in tears. A holiday spent together by members of the same family and their close relatives unexpectedly led them to the valley of death, deeply saddening everyone.

The tragedy was the severe drowning of eight people from a group who went to bathe in the Deduru Oya, flowing near Kuriyagaha Mankada in Abayagama, Kobeigane, on April 16. The most poignant fact is that seven of the victims, who fell into a deep pit in the Deduru Oya, known as 'Kaliya' among locals, were members of the same family.

From this great catastrophe, the small family of 49-year-old Sameera Pradeep, his 34-year-old wife Shyamali Kusumi, and their 10-year-old son Agen Nimsara all left this world. Additionally, the elders 72-year-old Dharmadasa and 70-year-old Ananda, 42-year-old Nirosha Lakmali and her 13-year-old son Dineth Madushan, and 18-year-old Senura Kavinda, the son of their friend, also fell victim to this untimely death. The books of three children, who dreamt of the future and were pursuing A/L and school education, were closed forever as their parents breathed their last nearby.

According to eyewitnesses and locals, one person initially slipped into this deep pit filled with sand and mud, and then, one after another, others drowned trying to save him. Only Roshani Ananda, who serves in the Air Force, and her husband Dilip Yasas survived this great disaster. Although they were rescued by the strenuous efforts of the locals and hospitalized, she is still receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.

This is not just a random incident. This place, where death lurks, has claimed lives before, serving as a deadly spot. In 2024, two students, and in 2025, a young man who came for a birthday party, also lost their lives at this very spot. Although the festive season is a time for water play, the fact that over 20 deaths due to drowning were reported across the island in just a few short days from April 12 to 16 raises a serious social issue.

The Police Media Spokesperson's Office points out that going to unknown and unsafe places for bathing, and bathing while intoxicated, are the main causes of such tragedies. Despite warnings and the introduction of safe zones with lifeguard services, why people still risk their lives for temporary enjoyment remains an unresolved problem for both authorities and society.

Before jumping into any body of water at first sight to enjoy, repeatedly considering the depth of death hidden beneath its calm surface will be the only way to prevent such untimely deaths.
