The body of a person, who was reported missing about one and a half years ago while residing in the Panadura area, was exhumed yesterday (6) morning from the Horana Thibbatuwawoda public cemetery where it had been buried. The exhumation was carried out under the supervision of Horana Chief Magistrate Lakmini Vidanagama and Horana District General Hospital Judicial Medical Officer Sandakan Waduge, during which the police found parts of the body packed in two sacks.
The person murdered has been identified as thirty-one-year-old Sadun Udara Alwis, also known as 'Haawa' (Rabbit), who resided on Galpotta Road, Kiriberiya, Hirana, Panadura. He was a hired three-wheeler driver and went missing after taking a pregnant woman on a hired trip on August 3, 2024. His missing green three-wheeler had previously been found by the police in the Padukka area, with its color changed to black and its number plates swapped. His wife, Chaturi Lakshani, had also filed a complaint with the Hirana Police regarding the incident.
Police have revealed that this murder was carried out on a contract given by 'Kudu Salindu,' a powerful underworld gang leader and drug trafficker hiding in Dubai. The deceased, Sadun Udara, was the main witness in a murder case allegedly committed by Kudu Salindu's faction at the Panadura Pinwala public cemetery in 2021. For this reason, Kudu Salindu had assigned this murder contract to four individuals through his associate 'Nilanga,' also known as 'Maluwa' (Fish).
These investigations commenced based on information received by Mr. Rohan Olugala, Director of the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Strike Force and Assistant Superintendent of Police. Accordingly, on April 2nd, three suspects were arrested by the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Strike Force in connection with the incident of a person being murdered and buried in the Thibbatuwawoda cemetery. These arrests were made approximately two years after the murder. Based on information obtained from these suspects, the exhumation of the body was carried out with the assistance of employees from the Millaniya Pradeshiya Sabha.
Investigators also found a fishing line inside the exhumed sacks, and the police are further investigating whether this murder was committed by strangulation using it. A police team led by Mr. Rohan Olugala, Director of the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Unit, along with Panadura Divisional Crime Scene Investigation officers, Horana Headquarters Police Inspector Ranga Perera, and Crime Division OIC Rasika Prasad, were present at the time of the body's exhumation. Local residents also gathered at the cemetery to witness the incident.
