The team of twins representing Sri Lanka departed from Katunayake International Airport last night (28th) to participate in the world's largest twin festival in 2026, which will be held in Mojiang, Yunnan Province, China. It is reported that this special team commenced their journey to Chengdu, China, at 10:15 PM last night on China National Airlines flight CA-426.

Arrangements have been made to hold this massive cultural festival from tomorrow (30th) until May 04th, with the participation of over 100,000 twins from 70 countries worldwide. This year marks the 20th edition of the Mojiang International Twin Festival, and it is considered one of China's most popular and internationally recognized ethnic festivals.

At this festival, the Sri Lankan twin team is prepared to present several cultural elements unique to the country, including dance performances, songs, poems, and stories that showcase Sri Lankan identity. It is expected that this will be a unique opportunity to showcase Sri Lankan heritage to the international community.

Mojiang County, where the festival is held, is known worldwide as the "Home of Twins" due to its unusually high twin birth rate. This region reports a rate more than four times higher than the global average twin birth rate, with over 1,200 twin pairs living in Mojiang County alone. Locals believe that the Tropic of Cancer passing through the middle of this town and legendary places like the "Twin Wells" are reasons for this unusual phenomenon.

This festival, which began in 2005, has achieved significant development to date, with approximately 18,000 twin pairs from over 40 countries participating over the years. Comprising massive parades, talent shows, traditional Hani tribal dances, and numerous food exhibitions, this festival is also a major cultural event that generates significant revenue for China's tourism sector.
