President's Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake filed an official complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) this morning (11th), requesting a comprehensive investigation into alleged irregularities in the import of coal to Sri Lanka.
The Presidential Media Division announced that a formal investigation into all coal imports from 2009 to date is expected through this. The President's Secretary has taken this step based on serious issues raised regarding this import process through various audit reports and parliamentary debates.
Meanwhile, Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Bimal Ratnayake, revealed in Parliament yesterday that the President is working to appoint a special Presidential Commission of Inquiry with full powers to investigate this coal crisis.
The Minister further emphasized that the relevant commission is expected to be established after the no-confidence motion brought against the Minister of Power, and serving Supreme Court judges will be appointed for its investigative work.
