The untimely demise of Sushant Singh Rajput, a prominent actor in Indian cinema, was an event that shocked the entire Indian society.
He, who won the hearts of audiences through popular films like MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Chhichhore, and Dil Bechara, was 34 years old when he committed suicide on June 14, 2020, in a rented apartment in the Mount View housing complex in Bandra, Mumbai. All official investigations, including post-mortem reports and inquiries by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), have now confirmed that this was a suicide by hanging, without any criminal involvement. On the day before this tragic incident, specifically on the night of June 13, he went to his bedroom after dinner. Around 2:00 AM, he made phone calls to his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty and actor Mahesh Shetty, but they did not respond. Investigations later revealed that on the morning of June 14, he searched online for topics such as "schizophrenia," "bipolar disorder," and "painless death." Around 9:00 AM, he spoke to his sister on the phone, and around 10:00 AM, he consumed fruit juice and medication. Subsequently, around 11:30 AM, his cook and two friends knocked on his room door, and receiving no response, they opened the door with the help of a locksmith. They found him hanging from the ceiling fan. The police and family relatives were informed, but no suicide note was found in the room.
Both the preliminary and final post-mortem reports conducted by a medical team confirmed that asphyxia due to strangulation was the cause of death. A ligature mark was present around the neck (deeper on the right side), but no external injuries, signs of struggle, or other signs of foul play were observed on the body. Subsequently, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) also medically concluded that it was a clear case of suicide, confirming that there was no poisoning or homicidal strangulation.
With this incident, the most discussed aspect was the involvement of Sushant's girlfriend, actress Rhea Chakraborty. The two had met during film shoots and maintained a romantic relationship for about a year, living in the same house. She had left the house approximately a week before Sushant's death (around June 8). In the last week before his death, there was no contact between the two or their families. However, on July 25, 2020, Sushant's father, K. K. Singh, filed a First Information Report (FIR) in Patna against Rhea and her family members, accusing them of abetment to suicide, defrauding him of 15 crore rupees, wrongful confinement, and mental harassment.
Following this complaint, the preliminary investigations conducted by the Mumbai Police were transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in August, by an order from the Indian Supreme Court. Additionally, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) initiated investigations regarding money laundering, and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) began investigations concerning drug charges. As a result, on September 8, 2020, Rhea and her brother were arrested, and she had to spend 28 days in jail. Throughout this period, various opinions, conspiracy theories, and intense debates about nepotism in Bollywood emerged across media and social networks, and Rhea faced significant public disapproval and hatred. She later stated that the society and media had waged a witch-hunt against her. Furthermore, reports indicated that Sushant suffered from severe depression and professional problems.
Following investigations that lasted for nearly five years, the final report by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), submitted to the Mumbai court in March and October 2025, acquitted Rhea Chakraborty and her family of all these charges. The report clearly stated that there was no evidence of abetment to suicide, coercion, or financial fraud. Investigators pointed out that the amount spent for Rhea, between 16 and 17 lakh rupees, was considered normal family expenses, and all rumors and accusations against her were baseless. Rhea's lawyer stated that this was merely a clear case of suicide, and official investigations from all angles have confirmed that there was no criminal involvement from any party in Sushant Singh Rajput's death.
