How fateful is it that gold jewelry, hidden for safety fearing thieves, eventually ended up in a pile of junk at a shop that collects old items?
This strange yet tragic incident reported from the Chavara area in Kollam district, Kerala, India, is a perfect example of how far a small mistake in our daily lives can go. The family members very cleverly hid gold jewelry worth about six pounds inside an old school textbook with the intention of protecting it from thieves.
However, when clearing out unwanted old items from the house, Ummarkutty sold everything, including the book containing the hidden gold, to a shop called 'AN Traders' belonging to A. Nisar, which buys old items, without any realization of the huge mistake he had made.
The family members realized that they had lost one of the most valuable assets of their lives three days later. By then, the book containing the gold had become part of a massive pile of old items and paper at the shop. The panicked family immediately rushed to the shop and, along with five of its employees, began a massive search operation, sifting through the pile of junk.
This operation was so difficult that during the search, which lasted for several days under intense sunlight, two of the employees involved even suffered sunstroke. After great effort, they first managed to find the earrings, bangles, and rings that had fallen out of the box, and the next day, they also found the necklace that was safely inside the box.
However, about four grams of gold are still missing. Due to the shop owner's honesty and police intervention, steps were taken to officially hand over the recovered gold to M. S. Anitha, Ummarkutty's wife, at the Thekkumbagam Police Station.
Gold hidden inside books for safety ultimately teaches life an unforgettable valuable lesson.
