Gautam Adani has succeeded in becoming the richest person in India as well as in Asia, surpassing Mukesh Ambani, who previously held that position.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index updated on April 17, 2026, Adani's net worth has risen to $92.6 billion, placing him 19th globally. Meanwhile, Mukesh Ambani, with a net worth of $90.8 billion, has dropped to 20th place on the list of global billionaires.

By mid-April this year (2026), Gautam Adani's wealth has grown by $8.1 billion, and on some recent days, his wealth has increased by an exceptionally high amount of $3.56 billion. In contrast, Mukesh Ambani's wealth has fallen by $16.9 billion this year, which is considered the largest setback for a leading billionaire in Asia.

The continuous rise in stock prices of companies belonging to the Adani Group in the port, energy, and infrastructure sectors has been the main reason for this growth. Adani also operates India's largest private port network, as well as the largest renewable energy and private airport network. Through the increase in the stock value of about 10 of his companies listed on the stock market, he has also become the first-generation entrepreneur in India to build a business empire with a market capitalization exceeding $200 billion.

On the other hand, Mukesh Ambani's wealth primarily depends on Reliance Industries, which spans the energy, telecommunications (Jio), and retail sectors. Despite owning the world's largest refining complex and a powerful company in the digital economy, his asset growth has been relatively slow due to recent market fluctuations.

There is a long-standing rivalry between these two business giants for the top spot on the list. Adani first took the lead in February 2022, surpassing Ambani, who had been India's richest person for over a decade. However, in 2023, Ambani regained the lead after the Adani Group lost about $100 billion in market value due to the American Hindenburg report. Adani then took the lead again in mid-2024, and it was Ambani's turn in mid-2025. As of April 2026, Adani has once again claimed the crown.

According to the Global Billionaires Index, Elon Musk, head of Tesla and SpaceX, continues to be the world's richest person with a net worth of $656 billion. Larry Page, co-founder of Google's parent company Alphabet, is in second place with $286 billion, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is in third place with $269 billion. Adani and Ambani are the only two Indians included in the top 50 of the global rich list, and India's next richest person after them, Lakshmi Mittal, has a net worth of $36.9 billion.
