Deputy Inspector General of Police W.P.J. Senadheera, in charge of Traffic and Road Safety, stated that the driver involved has been arrested after a video showing a three-wheeler being driven in an extremely dangerous manner in the Katugastota area circulated on social media.
The police first became aware of this incident after the public released the relevant video footage online.
Following the report of this incident to the Katugastota Police Station OIC last Tuesday (10), the police acted and arrested the 26-year-old suspect for reckless driving.
The Deputy Inspector General also mentioned that a subsequent investigation after the arrest confirmed that the suspect had used cannabis.
The suspect was produced before the court today, where several serious charges, including attempted murder, were filed against him.
Meanwhile, investigations also revealed that the transfer documents for the three-wheeler were not properly completed. Accordingly, Mr. Senadheera further stated that future investigations would be conducted under the Motor Traffic Act regarding both the person who sold the vehicle, a resident of Galaha, and the person who purchased it.
The Deputy Inspector General expressed his gratitude to the public for informing the police about this incident and emphasized that law enforcement would promptly act on information provided by the public regarding such dangerous driving and road rule violations in the future.
