Deputy Minister of Mass Media, Attorney-at-Law Kaushalya Aryaratne, stated yesterday (05) in Parliament that the Government's Director General of Information has intervened regarding the injustice caused to journalists and employees due to the closure of Mawbima newspaper. The Deputy Minister also mentioned that the Director General of Information is working to obtain advice from the Ministry of Labour to find a successful solution to this problem.




She expressed these views during the adjournment debate held in Parliament on the occasion of International Women's Day.

The Deputy Minister pointed out that with the information received about the impending closure of Mawbima newspaper, there is a risk of approximately fifty people losing their jobs. She also recalled that it has been reported that salaries and Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) payments have not been made to the employees of the relevant institution, and that she had emphasized in Parliament during the past few days that journalists should be paid properly.




The Minister emphasized that as a government, steps would be taken to ensure the safety of journalists, and that the media industry should be maintained sustainably.
