Leading opposition political party leaders in Sri Lanka have sent a special letter to several international professional and human rights organizations, pointing out that an extremely dangerous situation has currently arisen in the country regarding the safety of lawyers and the general public.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, former President and United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, and United Republican Front Leader Patali Champika Ranawaka have signed this special letter. In addition, it is noteworthy that a group of prominent political leaders, including Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna National Organizer, Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa, Member of Parliament Jeevan Thondaman, and Member of Parliament Mano Ganesan, have also expressed their agreement and signed it.
This letter, signed by political leaders, has been sent to global organizations related to the legal profession, including the International Bar Association, the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, the International Commission of Jurists, the International Young Lawyers' Association, and the International Association of Democratic Lawyers. Furthermore, it has also been copied to several international human rights institutions such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the International Federation for Human Rights, the World Organisation Against Torture, Front Line Defenders, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the United Nations on Human Rights Defenders.
A key point highlighted in the letter is that a pattern of horrific shootings and killings using modern firearms has currently emerged across the country. Under these circumstances, over sixty people have lost their lives in the past year alone, and it has been emphasized that nine murders have been reported this year within a short period. The opposition leaders have further informed the international community through their letter that the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, who is primarily responsible for protecting the lives of citizens, has completely failed to properly fulfill that responsibility.
