Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption have arrested a police sergeant attached to the traffic division of the Akkaraipattu Police Station on charges of accepting a bribe.
This arrest was made during an operation launched based on a complaint lodged with the Commission by a businessman residing in the Akkaraipattu area.
The incident was triggered by an accident where the complainant's mother fell from a motorcycle ridden by him.
Acting on information received via the 119 emergency hotline regarding this matter, the suspect police officer, after recording a statement from the mother, demanded a bribe of Rs. 5,000 to refrain from taking legal action and to return the driver's license that had been taken into police custody.
According to the Bribery Commission, the suspect had taken Rs. 1,000 at the first instance and simultaneously released the complainant's driver's license back to him.
Subsequently, while attempting to collect the remaining Rs. 4,000 at the Akkaraipattu Hospital premises, based on the promise to not enforce the law, the suspect police sergeant was apprehended by the officers.
