A school student has died in a tragic road accident that occurred when a motorcycle attempted to dangerously ride on one wheel in the Athurugiriya area. The fourteen-year-old student, named Deneth Vidushana Wedage of Ahangama, who resided in Bakmeegaha Road, Pore, Athurugiriya, faced this unfortunate fate.

Athurugiriya Police confirm that the person who rode the motorcycle also sustained serious injuries in this incident and has now been transferred to the Colombo National Hospital.

According to police investigations, the accident occurred while the deceased student was riding on the pillion of a motorcycle driven by a friend. The motorcyclist attempted to lift the front wheel of the motorcycle and ride only on the rear wheel at high speed on the road. Due to this unsafe riding, the motorcyclist lost control of the speed, causing the motorcycle to veer off the road and collide head-on with a lorry parked in the opposite lane.

Police state that due to this powerful collision, the motorcycle split into two pieces, and both occupants were thrown onto the road. Subsequently, residents immediately acted and admitted the injured to Homagama Base Hospital for treatment. However, after being admitted to the hospital, the school student who was riding as the pillion rider passed away, and hospital authorities took steps to refer the critically injured motorcyclist to the Colombo National Hospital for further treatment.

Mr. Chinthaka Udaya Kumara, the Homagama Inquirer into Sudden Deaths and Justice of the Peace, conducted the initial on-site inspection at the accident location. Following this, the body was referred to Dr. M. S. Dineth, the Judicial Medical Officer at Homagama Base Hospital, for a post-mortem examination. According to the inquiry into sudden deaths and medical reports, it has been revealed that the death was caused by severe blunt force trauma to the head resulting from the collision between the lorry and the motorcycle. A team of officers, including Police Constable Kapila (35728) of Athurugiriya Police, is conducting further investigations into this incident.
