
According to the latest data from the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, remittances sent to Sri Lanka by migrant workers during the first two months of this year (2026) have increased to 1.4 billion US dollars. The Bureau points out that this is a significant growth of 32 percent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year, 2025.The total amount of foreign remittances received by the country for the two months of January and February in 2025 was recorded as 1,121 million US dollars.
Specifically, the amount of foreign remittances received by the country in February alone is 729 million US dollars. This shows an extremely significant growth when compared to the value of 548.1 million US dollars recorded in February 2025. Accordingly, it is confirmed that a clear stability and growth in the foreign exchange flowing into the country is evident during the first quarter of this year.
Meanwhile, statistics reveal that the number of Sri Lankans going abroad for employment opportunities continues to remain at an active level. In the first two months of 2026 alone, 47,819 individuals have departed for foreign employment. Additionally, during the short nine-day period from the first to the ninth of March this year, another 3,241 Sri Lankan workers have officially registered under the Bureau for their foreign employment activities.
