Five private bank employees who assaulted police officers who stopped a car violating traffic laws near the Mill Roundabout on Havelock Road, Wellawatte, have been arrested by the Wellawatte Police. This incident was reported at midnight on the 19th, and when attempting to issue a fine ticket to the driver, the enraged group pushed a police officer to the ground and assaulted him.

The said car was driven very carelessly, changing lanes, and was stopped by two police constables on duty. When they were explaining the offense and preparing to issue a fine ticket, the driver and four occupants from the back seat got out and engaged in a heated argument with the police officers. Becoming aggressive, they pushed one officer off the road, and due to the ensuing struggle, the two injured constables were admitted to the South Colombo Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila for treatment.

Those arrested are a group working at a private bank located in the Fort area of Colombo, and they are residents of Galle, Panadura, and Nugegoda. They behaved in this manner while returning by car after attending a birthday party at a hotel near Colombo's Lotus Tower. Police sources indicate that they behaved very indecently, obstructing other vehicles on the road while assaulting the police officers.

Another police team on night patrol was called to the scene to control this volatile situation. Subsequently, with the assistance of that police team and ordinary citizens on the road, great effort was made to subdue and arrest the five unruly bank employees. The Wellawatte Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
