The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has decided to name Mr. R. Duminda Silva, former Chairman of the National Housing Development Authority and former Member of Parliament, as a suspect in connection with an incident where a sum of fifty lakhs rupees was accepted as a bribe for intervening to grant bail to 'Dematagoda Ruwan', a well-known drug trafficker.
Officials of the Bribery Commission informed this yesterday (03) by presenting facts before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama, and the Magistrate ordered that Mohamed Mohideen Sapras Nawaz, who has already been arrested by them in connection with the incident, be remanded until the upcoming 13th.
Investigations conducted by the Bribery Commission have already revealed that this bribe of fifty lakhs rupees was accepted by the relevant suspects with the full knowledge of Mr. R. Duminda Silva during his tenure as the Chairman of the National Housing Development Authority.
Concurrently, another suspect who had accepted a bribe of one hundred lakhs rupees was also involved in this incident, but investigation officers further stated before the court that he is currently not alive.
Accordingly, the Colombo Chief Magistrate has ordered the Bribery Commission to conduct a comprehensive investigation against Mr. R. Duminda Silva, who has been newly named as a suspect in connection with this incident, and to report on it to the court expeditiously.
