Investigators suspect that a powerful underworld leader operating from abroad is behind the shooting deaths of a lawyer and his wife at a supermarket car park in the Talangama, Akuregoda area. This murder was reported this evening, and police speculate it was an organized crime carried out on a contract.
The victims of this inhumane murder are lawyer Buddhika Mallawarachchi and his wife, Wellala Arachchige Nisansala Pubudu Ledola Walallawita, who was employed at a government institution. It has been revealed that the lawyer, originally from the Pitigala area, was currently residing in the Pore area of Athurugiriya.
Police investigations have revealed that this lawyer frequently represented prominent underworld gang members in their legal cases. He also represented 'Loku Pati,' a key suspect in the murder of businessman Club Wasantha at the Athurugiriya Tattoo Center. This lawyer had been handling Loku Pati's legal affairs since he was arrested abroad and brought back to the country. This morning, he appeared on behalf of Loku Pati in the said murder case heard at the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court, where the suspects were presented to the court via video technology from prison.
Furthermore, police confirm that this lawyer also represented the criminal known as 'Karandeniya Sudda,' who has been residing abroad for some time. Police intelligence has received information that a conflict has arisen between Karandeniya Sudda and Loku Pati, and investigators are closely examining whether this double murder is a result of that conflict.
This afternoon, while the lawyer was driving home in his silver Toyota Yaris (BCM 6640) after picking up his wife from the Battaramulla area, they encountered this crime. They had stopped at a supermarket in Akuregoda, and by then, the killers had already followed them. It has also been revealed that the gunmen, who arrived in a grey Honda Civic, had waited on the road near the supermarket for some time.
Subsequently, as the lawyer and his wife exited the supermarket, got into their vehicle, and were about to start driving, two gunmen ambushed them. The lawyer, who was in the driver's seat, was shot with a T-56 firearm, and his wife, in the adjacent seat, was shot with a sidearm resembling a pistol, with multiple shots fired. The police state that the lawyer sustained severe head injuries from the shooting, with parts of his head scattered inside the vehicle. According to security camera footage, the police suspect these gunmen are highly trained and experienced individuals, and several special police teams have already launched operations to apprehend them.
